Complete Holi Skincare Guide: Expert Tips for Before & After Holi

Holi is all fun and games until you step into the shower to wash off that color but end up pink for 2 whole days. Follow these tips and tricks from Dr Jafferany, our Head of Advisory Council for a fuss-free Holi and healthy skin.

Pre-Holi Skin Prep

Pre-Holi preparation should be systematic. Begin with thorough moisturisation to strengthen barrier function.

A light layer of body oil may then be applied to create a superficial protective film, followed by broad-spectrum SPF 50 on all exposed areas. Sunlight, perspiration, and colour irritants together increase the risk of inflammation and pigmentation.

Lip protection is frequently overlooked. A lip balm containing SPF should be applied to prevent post-inflammatory darkening and dryness.

In a nutshell:

  1. Moisturize (face & body): If you want that colour to come off at all - moisturize all over. More than you usually would. Moisturized skin is slippery - which means colour will not cling to dry and dead skin, making it come off easier. It also creates another layer between colour and your skin barrier, protecting it from damage or irritation.
  2. Oil up: Taking moisturizing one step further, protect your skin from catching colour with a body oil. A thin, even layer is sufficient. Over-application may lead to discomfort.
  3. Nail care: Before you even touch colour, coat your nails in coconut oil. This prevents them from staining and helps you avoid the embarrassment of having pink nails 2 weeks after Holi.
  4. Hair protection: Oil your scalp thoroughly to prevent staining and to protect your strands. Holi colour can leave your hair feeling dry, fizzy, and dehydrated, attracting dirt and causing further damage. Pro tip: protect your hairline, ears and neck with oil too.
  5. SPF for face & body: The easiest fluke - skipping sunscreen for Holi celebrations is a no-go. Protect your face and body with a good SPF 50. Spending hours in the sun with no sun protection can be really harsh on the skin.

Post-Holi

Post-Holi, the emphasis must shift to restoration. Cleansing must be gentle — a mild, sulfate-free cleanser with lukewarm water is sufficient. Avoid aggressive scrubbing. Barrier restoration through hydration and antioxidant support is far more effective than mechanical exfoliation in the immediate recovery phase.

Post Holi Tips:

  1. Dust off before shower: Water activates pigment and staining—so dusting off dry colour before will prevent those stubborn stains from catching.

  2. Gentle Cleansing: Go slow and steady to wash off any stains with a gentle cleanser that has no harsh chemicals or strong acids. Sulfate-free, hydrating formulas are the best option, since the lather formed is not harsh and won’t strip the skin of moisture. A lack of moisture is what makes the skin feel rough, damaged, and sensitive.

  3. Skin barrier care: Your skin needs to breathe, recover, and rejuvenate after sun and pigment exposure. Help your skin barrier recover with skin-healing ingredients like ceramides, peptides and urea. These help strengthen sensitive skin and heal damage.

  4. Do not scrub: Harsh exfoliants and crystals will irritate your already sensitive skin.

  5. Avoid waxing, shaving and threading: These aggravate already sensitized skin and can increase inflammation.

  6. Avoid heavy fragrance in products: It’s also important to be cautious of over-fragranced or aggressively formulated products. Harsh actives and heavy scent profiles may feel indulgent initially but can paradoxically increase skin stress and sensitivity over time.
  7. Oily and acne-prone skin needs double cleansing: Using an oil cleanser to break down gunk and then cleansing with a foaming cleanser. Make sure you get rid of all that dust and colour, so nothing clogs pores and causes more breakouts.

Ideally, products meant for post-Holi skin support should be barrier-supportive, low-irritant and anti-inflammatory.
